After news broke this morning that play-by-play announcer Bob Uecker passed away, I knew I had to write something. It’s just now coming out because it took me a while to come up with a way to start it out; frankly, I still don’t know. I’ve never been this affected by the death of someone I don’t personally know, and I think it’s because it felt as if I did know Uecker. As I grew up, my dad and I spent so much time together listening to him call Milwaukee Brewers games on the radio as he drove me home from baseball practice, or on the way home from school, and even having the game on the TV but muted so we can hear the infamous Bob Uecker say, “Get up, get up, get outta here, gone!!!” through the radio. I’m 21 years old, and today is the first day of my life that Bob Uecker is no longer calling games for the Milwaukee Brewers, it’s something that when put into words seems so little, but when baseball season comes around, it will never feel be same as it previously has.
As I mentioned earlier, it felt as if I knew Bob Uecker personally. What Uecker did isn’t typical, announcers alike do not leave the legacy he is leaving behind him. He created a relationship with his audience through his witty jokes, enthusiastic voice, and ability to tell a story. It’s something that will never be replicated, Uecker truly is a one-of-one human being. I want to list some of the many accolades the legend accrued over his incredible career.
- 1964 World Series Champion
- 1971 was hired to do Play-by-play for his hometown team the Milwaukee Brewers
- 2003 Ford C. Frick Award winner due to his contributions to the game as a broadcaster
- 2003 Baseball Hall-of-fame inductee
- Called the 1982 World Series
This is only a short list of the numerous things Mr. Baseball has accomplished over his career. This post isn’t long, but it felt like a necessity. His legacy deserves to be shared as he was adored by many across the world. Milwaukee loves you, Bob Uecker.
